Types of Garage Door Springs

A garage door has several key components working in harmony to ensure safe and proper operation. One of the most crucial elements of every garage door system is springs. Garage doors are enormously heavy, and the springs help offset their weight and make them easier and safer to open and close.

Proper selection, installation, and maintenance of garage door springs are critical to ensure smooth garage door movement. Failure to do so results in a malfunctioning garage door that poses a safety hazard. The door may stop altogether, get stuck, or collapse, causing property damage, injuries, and death.

Garage door springs have a limited lifespan. Homeowners should ensure proper care of the garage door springs and inspect them regularly for repair or replacement needs.

A garage door has several key components working in harmony to ensure safe and proper operation, one that affects the door’s function is springs. Garage doors are enormously heavy, and the springs help offset their weight and make them easier and safer to operate.

Garage door springs have a limited lifespan, and homeowners should inspect them regularly to identify any repair or replacement needs.

Types of garage door springs

Torsion springs and extension springs are the two most common garage door springs. Each works differently and has its benefits. Read on to understand the differences between torsion springs and extension springs to make the best decision for your garage door.

Torsion spring

Torsion springs are most prevalent in residential garages. They are located on the metal shaft above the garage door and use torque to operate. When force is applied to open or close the garage door, either manually or via motor, torsion springs wind or unwind.

Depending on the door’s weight, height, and strength, a garage door can have up to four torsion springs. Torsion springs come in varied sizes and lengths. The garage door’s weight, height, and track radius determine which spring to use.

Though torsion springs are more expensive than extension springs, they are more durable, safer (due to fewer exposed parts), have a longer lifespan, require less maintenance, and allow smoother closing and opening of the garage door.

Torsion springs are classified as standard torsion spring, early set torsion spring, steel rolling door torsion spring, and torque master torsion spring.

Extension spring

Extension springs are more visible than torsion springs. A garage door usually has two extension springs placed on either side, running parallel to the horizontal track and operating independently of each other. The extension spring uses a system of pulleys and counterbalance cables to lift the garage door. They store energy by extending or stretching. The spring extends when the door opens and compresses when it closes.

Extension springs are more affordable than torsion springs. However, the constant stretching and compressing make extension springs wear out faster. They also have more parts and components than torsion springs and are more likely to experience issues and demand more repairs.

Extension springs are less safe than torsion springs as they can harm people or damage objects when they break and snap off. Extension springs are categorized into double looped, open looped, and clipped ends.

A garage door becomes impossible to lift manually or with a garage door opener if it doesn’t have springs or the existing ones are broken. Knowing the type of spring the garage door uses is helpful and simplifies the call to a garage door installation and repair service. A professional will help determine which is the nest for a garage door.
